PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

TRANSMISSION LINE MECHANIC TRAINEE-

Receives formal and on the job training to job specific skills and tasks as they relate to Overhead Electric Transmission Construction and Maintenance activities to include overhead transmission cellular and microwave work. Learns principles of basic electricity theory and utility infrastructure, rigging and hoisting, use and care of tools, safety equipment, safety rules and practices. Operates power tools and heavy equipment used in electric transmission line construction. Learns how to interpret construction drawings and standards. Works from towers, steel and wood poles, to include microwave towers over 200 feet in height. Works from man lifts, platforms and bucket trucks at varying heights (some over 200 feet) in proximity to energized electrical circuits. Performs other job duties as assigned.

Note: Required to work during storm and emergency situations, including distribution restoration. Must be available for on-call coverage and overtime. Works in all weather conditions.

TRANSMISSION LINE MECHANIC-B -

Performs the following construction functions under the guidance of a Transmission Crew Leader or alternate. Climbs and works from steel towers and wood pole structures as necessary to install, maintain and inspect transmission facilities and similar appurtenance in substations. Works from engineering drawing, sketches and specifications. Performs rigging operations for installation and removal of electrical equipment. Erects scaffolds around equipment and installs protective barriers near energized equipment. Works from manlifts, on platforms, on towers, conductors (over 100 feet high), transformers, and similar equipment. Performs surveying to establish lines and grades and utilizes various electrical instruments. Drives cars and trucks; operates various equipment including backhoes, trenchers, dozers, etc.

Note: Is required to jobsite report and work during emergencies, including distribution. Must be available for overtime. Works in all weather conditions.

Climbs 100 ft. structures.

TRANSMISSION LINE MECHANIC-

Performs the following construction functions under the guidance of a Transmission Crew Leader or alternate. Climbs and works from steel towers and wood pole structures and microwave towers. Installs, maintains and inspects transmission facilities microwave and cellular phone sites. Provides inspection and/or safety watchman services of contractor personnel working on all company and cellular equipment. Works from manlifts, platforms, towers and conductors over 100 feet high. Works in confined space manholes and pump houses. Tests and grounds transmission and substation equipment up to 500kV. Performs construction surveying to establish lines and grades and utilizes various electrical instruments. Drives cars and trucks operates various equipment including backhoes, condor lifts, trenchers, and bulldozers. Installs protective devices on live distribution feeders in conjunction with line pulling operations. Performs Crew Leader or Job Supervisor duties during Crew Leader absence. Provides assistance to Crew Leader in on job training of new employees and contractors

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:

TRANSMISSION LINE MECHANIC TRAINEE –

  • Knowledge of hand tools.

  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings prints, etc.

  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet Company driving standards. Ability to obtain appropriate Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, where applicable.

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to safely operate large construction equipment (e.g., Cranes, Dozers, Backhoes, Skid-steers, Pole-Cats, Aerial Lifts, etc.)

  • Satisfactory completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Test Battery.

  • Must pass U.S. Depart. of Transportation-required chemical test.

  • Successful completion of Phase One training at Company training facility.

  • Successfully pass all required customer and governmental background requirements as to be able to obtain access to company facilities (E.g., NSA, Fort Meade, CSX, etc.).

  • HS diploma or equivalent

  • Training, education and/or experience in a technical or vocational field; or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.

TRANSMISSION LINE MECHANIC - B -

  • Demonstrates ability in the skills necessary to install and maintain overhead transmission facilities.

  • Ability to operate power tools, equipment and drive trucks.

  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet Company driving standards.

  • Ability to obtain appropriate Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (where applicable).

  • Satisfactory completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Battery Tests.

  • Successful completion of the Transmission Line Mechanic Trainee Program and over one year job related work experience or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience

TRANSMISSION LINE MECHANIC-

  • Demonstrated ability in the skills necessary to install and maintain overhead, underground transmission facilities, microwave and cellular phone sites.

  • Ability to operate power tools, equipment, drive trucks.

  • Valid drivers license and the ability to meet Company driving standards.

  • Ability to obtain appropriate Commercial Drivers License, Class A, where applicable.

  • Satisfactory completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Test Battery.

  • Ability to work from engineering drawings, sketches and construction standards.

  • Qualified to hold all applicable permits relating to BGE permit and tagging procedures.

  • Successful completion of company confined space training.

  • Over four years related work experience or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience and completion of training as a Transmission Line Mechanic.
